There’s nothing like a good police chase to pass the time. The Need for Speed franchise has been a leader in racing games with police chases for many years on many platforms. Bringing a great driving experience with their legendary police chases to a cell phone seemed like a tough task. All in all, though, they did a great job.
The controls for the game are simple and work well. The handbrake has just the right amount of kick and the steering is rather smooth for a phone. There is no option for a manual transmission but that doesn’t really take away from the game. There is boost that helps with hammering through road blocks and a handy gauge for showing remaining health of opposing officers.
Speaking of police and roadblocks, EA didn’t pull any stops with Johnny Law’s presence. There are a multitude of police cars including Porsches, Mustangs, and the Bugatti Veyron. Roadblocks, spike strips, and the ever-present pursuit helicopter. The police cars have decent AI and are some of the most aggressive I’ve seen in Need for Speed games.
Gameplay is enjoyable and has the perfect setting for a mobile game: no plot. There is still progression through the game as you start with slower cars and move up to the exotics. Players can choose to continue to new events or replay previously completed ones if they so desire. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit for mobile is an excellent pick up and play racer.
