Freebie Fridays: Max Gentlemen

Good morr…hold on, we have to get in the mood for this game. Hold please.

That’s better!

Good morrow, good sir!

I hope you are having a bully day today. Is everyone having a bully day? Well, that’s just splendid. I must say the video game by the creators The Men Who Wear Many Hats’ (Organ Trail game) “Max Gentlemen” (CLICK FOR THE GAME) may have got me in a tizzy. It’s quite the way to go if you want to feel like a true gentlemen, especially for the lady-folk. Seriously, I’m sure if you and your lass play this video game your lass may turn into a lad, she will.

As “Max Gentlemen” goes, the objective is, as any good standing gentleman would know, is to collect hats. That’s right, hats. I may have to say that again: Max Gentlemen’s objective in most of these games is to go out there and collect as many hats as possible, beating your opponent. As of right now, there are two lads for the lads to choose, all of them have quite the splendid body. However, there are two packs available that will make your Gentlemen look as Gentlemenly as you…or look like Octodad, a lass mating with an octopus? What will they think of next?! Prohibition?! HUBHUBHUBHUBHUB!

It felt a little bit like WarioWare, where there is no real objective than the objective to gain more hats, and that is fine. But with that, I feel like this fits under the “Flappy Bird” category of games, but on a big scale. It’s one of those games where it’s very simple and very weird to play but you keep on playing it and you keep on liking this game. To me, that is all I want in my video games. I want to have fun. Max Gentlemen is just that, it’s a fun timewaster that I pop in and go crazy on for a few minutes, turn it off, do something, come back, do a few more minutes of Max Gentlemen, gather hats, make me look as dapper as I can be with multiple hats on my head (in real life, it’s pretty scary).

The only thing is, when I downloaded it all I get are two people and two places (a bar and on a stage coach) I don’t know what I was expecting, maybe more? I know there are packs for more stages and playing this game kind of wants me to buy these packs for obvious reasons (See: 1900s Octodad) but if I don’t want to buy it, I have to stick with going through Bronze, Silver and Gold classes collecting hat after hat after hat after hat and, honestly, that seems like the best that I can do.

If you have time on your hands and don’t know what to do, go to Steam or you mobile devices and download Max Gentlemen tonight. You won’t regret it one bit. If you do have a problem with this game, you deserve a harumph.

…Also the game was created due to male enhancement spam the creators got in their e-mail…no…seriously. (From: Kotaku)

“Max Gentlemen was first thought up as an afterthought to a spam email, for penis pills. We never read that email; instead we dreamt up the world of Max Gentlemen; A world of extreme victorian gents.”

“Max Gentlemen was a much larger game more akin to some sort of action-dating-sim. It was stupid. We dropped it. Then along came a Game Jam to make a drinking-themed game in one month for an arcade cabinet. We ran with one of our various mini-game ideas. The resulting game was met with much praise.”

“We brought the game to PAX East on a tiny arcade cabinet and once again, to our surprise, people loved it. They wanted to buy it. We decided we needed to give it our full attention. I thought it would take a month or two.”

“Many months later we ran a Kickstarter and raised 2,469% of our modest $500 goal. Sadly we did not reach our strech goal to make Max Gentlemen into a Victorian Style MMO. However, We did learn that the indie game body pillow market is a vast blue ocean of opportunity.”

“In the next few months we built a custom arcade cabinet and brought the game back to PAX East to showcase in the Indie Megabooth. Everyone there had a blast and reaffirmed our wavering spirits. The game was taking much longer than anticipated but had also grown into a handsome steroid-charged flower.”

“Now, Max Gentlemen is available to you.”

So to wrap up my experience, I think it’s worth a download, not sure if it’s worth a purchase at the 240msp price point but if you’re into wrestling games check it out.

Kickstarters you may not know about.

Despite some of the articles we put up here on Insert Coin to Begin, we really do love games from all places.(I am talking about me and my open letter to Polytron Re: Fez http://insertcointobegin.com/?p=2638 ) Without guys and girls developing in their basement and sharing with friends things never get out there. Take Monopoly for instance. (sorry, I watched Under the Boardwalk on the Netflix the other day) It started as one thing and ended up being passed around and copied by others to share. Took 30 years before it ended up as it is today.

Without word of mouth and the little guys taking a shot at something they would like to play the bigger guys don’t succeed as much. Food chain works every where. So, here are some things on Kickstarter that I believe will be interesting to at least try out for a little bit!

With 26 days to go Sauropod Studio from Montreal crushed their 80k goal in 5 hours and are currently sitting at 308k for their game called “Castle Story” . Using careful planning, local resources and physics you can build, expand and defend your castle against the games enemies. Check out the video for this.

They are expecting to have this game released on Oct 2012 so they are pretty far along on it already, they just need this to kick it to the goal! Swing by check out the rewards and updates for the game!

xGen studios is working on a comeback with a follow up to their hit game Motherload with Super Motherload. In case you have never played the original game you can play it free on their website http://www.xgenstudios.com/play/motherload In Motherload you play a miner that lands on a new place to navigate the dangers of the soil, complete with hidden gas pockets, earthquakes, and other surprises.

I played the hell out of the first one and beat it beyond belief. These guys put time and quality into their games and they could really use your help. With 11 days to go they are only at 11k of their 50k goal. So go over to http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/supermotherload/super-motherload and maybe help them out. Lets get them to their goal!

And last but not least DoubleBear Productions through the powers of crowd sourcing will be releasing Dead State. Dead State is a turn based RPG that puts you in the zombie apocalypse in a whole new way. Gathering allies, supplies, food and securing a shelter you will have to survive or perish. Interacting with characters and dialogue will determine which path you take and what story you get.

This is definitely something that I would pick up and probably will. Survival Zombie game is a game that I want to play.

Now I realize that gamers now a days are looking for the greatest graphics and easy game play. However, guys deserve a chance to break into gaming scene and prove they belong. So if you have some time at least check out these games and spread the word!

Indie Game: The Movie

If you listened to the ALPHA version of the upcoming “Let’s Play” show we’re working on, you heard Chachi bring up a game that has caught our attention around here lately called Fez
, a fun little indie game you can grab for $10 on Xbox Live Arcade that takes a new spin on 2D/3D platforming.

Imagine my surprise to discover a tweet by the enigmatic Woycheck about a movie featuring said game, as well as favorites like Braid and Super Meat Boy.  Check out the trailer here:
