Fav Five Friday: Games To Look For This E3*

*That we already know will be announced.

E3 is inching so close to us we can taste it. In fact, we are three months away from E3 and somewhere Gabe Newell just had a heart attack.

However, let us not waste precious time! June is right around the corner and THIS is your top 5 games to watch forat this year’s E3 event.

Now, the rules are different. Instead of listing 5 things, I am actually going to pick one from each major category (EA, Ubisoft, Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony). Let’s begin,  shall we?

MICROSOFT – Minecraft: Story Mode. For those of you who don’t know, Minecraft is now the property of Microsoft so I would not be surprised if this game gets announced at Microsoft’s E3. Also, it will be interesting to see how this game will look and feel, being it’s a story based game based off of a game that’s a free world based game.

SONY – Uncharted 4. This will be needed for a good E3 for Sony, as it was learned earlier this week that Uncharted’s release date was pushed back to 2016. Which blows. Hard. Maybe show some Beta footage along with a commercial. Get me excited to play this game, as I never had a PlayStation when Uncharted was a thing. It will be interesting to see how they turn this negative into a positive.

NINTENDO – (TIE) Zelda and Star Fox. Nintendo has hyped both of these games to no end ever since they were playing the open world Zelda game. I believe this is the time where Nintendo comes out guns a-blazing and shows us EVERYTHING about these two games. I want more, of course. Instead of watching some guy watch a green screen pretending he’s playing, play the game. DO A BARRELL ROLL! Oh God, I hope I actually get to play as Fox this time from the beginning and not ride a pterodactyl or something.

UBISOFT – Guess. I will give you three easy guesses on what I’m excited to see more information about. Show me something from Assassin’s Creed: Victory and my money will be tossed in your general direction, Ubisoft…it’s…it’s probably west. Do I need to tell you how Assassin’s Creed is going to be once Ubisoft announce it and show things from it? Hopefully no bugs, though. We don’t want that. I mean, look at England. LOOK AT IT!

ELECTRONIC ARTS: Mass. Effect. Four. Mass. Effect. Four. Mass. Effect. Four. Last year all we had was conception art, if this year is gameplay footage I will not be able to control my body. At all. I don’t expect gameplay, as it’s still quite possibly in the early early stages of development but man…I am a big Mass Effect fan and I don’t even know what to expect from this game. Do my choices in the first three games matter? Is Shepard in this? Is he not? Is this a prequel? Sequel? Do I play as a Prothean? Gah! Just tell me already!

E3: Don’t Be Shocked If No Mass Effect 4 News

Before you go all crazy on me about this one, let me please explain. The Mass Effect series is one of the best series that I have played over and over again. I enjoyed my time playing as Shepard and being the horndog that he (or she) was. The Mass Effect series is a gem and if you haven’t played it yet, stop reading this and play it…then come back.

Would I enjoy playing a new Mass Effect? Yeah. Would I be angry if they do announce it at E3? Hell no! Do I want it RIGHT NOW THIS VERY INSTANT?! If they announce it, yes. But I won’t be angry if they don’t.

The fact of the matter is, they don’t need to rush into things. The people over at EA and BioWare have other things that they need to worry about, i.e. DragonAge. An announcement of a Mass Effect game would overshadow their bigger game. They don’t need to rush into announcing anything concerning the Normandy (almost said Shepard, then got sad knowing he’s not going to be in this one). Not to mention, the last time EA and BioWare worked on a Mass Effect game, you guys knew what happened then: Electronic Arts won two Golden Poo awards and had to change their ending because of the petition that was filed by angry Mass Effect fans.

EA and BioWare know that they have a huge and dedicated fan base, they know that they have to make this game pop and make the fans forget about how angry they were with Mass Effect 3’s ending. They must get this game right and they must know what they’re doing before they do it so they don’t have deja vu.

Heck, we’re not even sure if “Mass Effect 4″ is the right title. It could be something completely different and out there. We don’t know.

My guess is if they do announce the new Mass Effect game next week (Remember, they have three chances to do so [EA, Microsoft and Sony]), it’s going to be announced around the same time as the new Mass Effect movie will come out so that they can get as much buys as they can get so as close as they can get to the Mass Effect: The Movie hits theaters, the more money EA will make (and we all know that Electronic Arts likes their money *cough*DAYONEDLC!*cough*.

Just give it time, people. Mass Effect will come. When it does, it will be awesome. Whether it is next week or next month or next year. It’s coming.

Mass Effect 4 Main Character Rumors Abound!

So you say that there’s going to be a brand spanking new Mass Effect coming out? You also say that it’s a prequel? Before the time and life of Shepard? So there HAS to be a new character, correct?

Well, the Official X-Box Magazine (OXM) has found out that BioWare has been throwing the names of Shepard’s allies of possible spin-offs in the Mass Effect universe. The character that leads all discussion is everybody’s FAVORITE Turian, Garrus! Garrus has the most backstory than any of the characters in the Mass Effect universe. HE WAS ARCHANGEL! The only con I see about this is that Mr. Valkarian is a gun-totter BUT his specialty happens to be the sniper rifle, a gun that isn’t quite a favorite in single players. Yes, it will be cool to calibrate things and yes his voice is smooth as I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter BUT the sniper rifle thing scares me.

I don’t want to play as JUST a sniper, you know? You know.

One intriguing character that was mentioned, which I will have no problem in seeing where this goes, will be playing as the Illusive Man. For those of you who don’t know, the Illusive Man is the head of Cerberus and was voiced by legendary actor Martin Sheen. This, actually, can fit for him. He doesn’t even have to fight to be the main character. The Illusive Man can use Cerberus to take control and goes into what you find out at the end of Mass Effect 3 (I won’t spoil it for those who need to play it).

Another one I won’t mind, which was brought up in the OXM article, is the last of the Protheans, Javik and his battle, which was featured in the “From Ashes” DLC.

However, I think the developers are TRYING to steer us into thinking that this story is just going to be about ONE character. I think they have something special. Hear me out, BioWare. You see what Rockstar is doing with Grand Theft Auto? They have THREE stories in ONE game. Why not do the same? Hell, feature more characters. Liara as Shadowbroker? The love of my life, Tali’Zorah? Aria? Also, each character will have their own special skill (Garrus – Soldier, Tali – Engineer, etc.). I mean, you have enough space to do it. You are, probably, going to have multiple discs (*if that’s still a thing in the future), why not use it to your advantage?

Here’s what I’m thinking, though. If you want a new experience and played Mass Effect (the first one) you are given the option to be a “Spacer” or “Earthbound” and “War Hero” and “Survivor”. Use a different team in that story and the  story that you picked for the first Mass Effect with the ending and BOOM! There’s your Shepard tie-in.

Also, a DLC featuring Blasto would be awesome, thank you.

Who would you like to see star in Mass Effect 4? Project Zero/Jack? Mordin? Joker in a Star Fox-esque flying battle? Someone COMPLETELY out of left field (a battle between shops who claim Shepard said that it was his favorite? Can make it into a Facebook game).

BioWare: Good News/Bad News.

“What do you want first? The good news or the bad news?” You hear that all the time when someone’s about to drop a bombshell announcement that could break your spirits. BioWare had that type of day, today. So…we will start with the good news, because I love to bring your hopes up…before, ultimately, crushing everything in one fail swoop.

BioWare has hinted that there’s a new game in the works, as well as announcing their new single player DLC!

BioWare Edmonton/Montreal’s GM Aayrn Flynn said THIS in an interview with IGN:

“Executive Producer Casey Hudson and his team are coming off an amazing eight-year run with the Mass Effect trilogy. But they’re not done yet,” Flynn wrote. “We are releasing more multiplayer content and we have more single-player stories coming throughout the next six months, including Omega which is coming in the Fall. But the Mass Effect universe is vast, and Casey and our teams have plans for another full game. ‘Where to go next?’ with such a project has been a question a lot of us have been asking, and we’d all love to hear your ideas.”

In recent talks with BioWare execs, they have mentioned that if they DO get a new video game, all together, Commander Shepard will not be in it.

ALSO, I hope you are all loving the Leviathan DLC that came out a few weeks ago because (as Flynn mentioned) they’re not done with Mass Effect just yet. PLUS the location of the new single player DLC will be…THAT SCUMMY HELLHOLE, OMEGA (I meant that in a good way)!

If you played Mass Effect 2, you would meet Aria who, while in the club, says “I AM OMEGA!” In Mass Effect 3, you meet up with her in the Citadel and Omega has been taken over by, DUN DUN DUUUUUN, Cerberus. So, it’s going to be weird to see if we get to team up with Aria, Blue Suns and Blood Pack (since Aria owns control of all three of the mercs) in the multiplayer aspect, or single player.

Now that you’ve taken the good…it’s time to take the bad.

Well, when they do create new DLCs and, hopefully, a brand new game, they are going to have to do it with new owners.

BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk both have announced their retirements from the company.

Here’s an excerpt from the doctors’ farewell messages:

Dr. Greg Zeschuk:

“After nearly twenty years working at BioWare I’ve decided it’s time to move on and pursue something new. This decision isn’t without significant pain and regret, but it’s also something I know I need to do, for myself and my family. I’ve reached an unexpected point in my life where I no longer have the passion that I once did for the company, for the games, and for the challenge of creation. For the people I have had the privilege of working with, however, my passion burns as brightly as it did the day we started. The people I work with now, and that I have worked with in the past, have inspired me and really made all of the challenges we’ve collectively faced over the years worthwhile. We have been blessed with tremendous success over the years at BioWare, and the reason is simply down to a large number of great people doing great work. Successful people or companies have to admit luck also plays a part in their success, and it certainly did for us; a few times over the years we made the right game at the right time and success flowed as a result. When we got it right, it was like a hole in one or a home run; it was a magical feeling and incomparable in positive impact for everyone involved.”

Dr. Ray Muzyka:

“The decision to leave the videogame industry is hard to explain, but essentially I feel similar now to how I felt in the early days of BioWare over the decade post-medical school, while I was still practicing as an ER physician, back when I first realized that the world of video games was my next career ‘chapter’. Two wonderful decades working at BioWare and later EA was the result of that decision. It’s not often that you can truly say you were able to pursue and achieve your dream job; I know how lucky I am to be able to say that now, in my early 40s.”
