Fav Five Friday: Games To Look For This E3*

*That we already know will be announced.

E3 is inching so close to us we can taste it. In fact, we are three months away from E3 and somewhere Gabe Newell just had a heart attack.

However, let us not waste precious time! June is right around the corner and THIS is your top 5 games to watch forat this year’s E3 event.

Now, the rules are different. Instead of listing 5 things, I am actually going to pick one from each major category (EA, Ubisoft, Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony). Let’s begin,  shall we?

MICROSOFT – Minecraft: Story Mode. For those of you who don’t know, Minecraft is now the property of Microsoft so I would not be surprised if this game gets announced at Microsoft’s E3. Also, it will be interesting to see how this game will look and feel, being it’s a story based game based off of a game that’s a free world based game.

SONY – Uncharted 4. This will be needed for a good E3 for Sony, as it was learned earlier this week that Uncharted’s release date was pushed back to 2016. Which blows. Hard. Maybe show some Beta footage along with a commercial. Get me excited to play this game, as I never had a PlayStation when Uncharted was a thing. It will be interesting to see how they turn this negative into a positive.

NINTENDO – (TIE) Zelda and Star Fox. Nintendo has hyped both of these games to no end ever since they were playing the open world Zelda game. I believe this is the time where Nintendo comes out guns a-blazing and shows us EVERYTHING about these two games. I want more, of course. Instead of watching some guy watch a green screen pretending he’s playing, play the game. DO A BARRELL ROLL! Oh God, I hope I actually get to play as Fox this time from the beginning and not ride a pterodactyl or something.

UBISOFT – Guess. I will give you three easy guesses on what I’m excited to see more information about. Show me something from Assassin’s Creed: Victory and my money will be tossed in your general direction, Ubisoft…it’s…it’s probably west. Do I need to tell you how Assassin’s Creed is going to be once Ubisoft announce it and show things from it? Hopefully no bugs, though. We don’t want that. I mean, look at England. LOOK AT IT!

ELECTRONIC ARTS: Mass. Effect. Four. Mass. Effect. Four. Mass. Effect. Four. Last year all we had was conception art, if this year is gameplay footage I will not be able to control my body. At all. I don’t expect gameplay, as it’s still quite possibly in the early early stages of development but man…I am a big Mass Effect fan and I don’t even know what to expect from this game. Do my choices in the first three games matter? Is Shepard in this? Is he not? Is this a prequel? Sequel? Do I play as a Prothean? Gah! Just tell me already!

Spencer Teases Fan Favorites

Phil Spencer gave an interview to The Inner Circle where he is pretty much saying all the right things.

In the interview, a list of video games were mentioned to Mr. Spencer and asked if any of the games were going to come back. The response Mr. Spencer gave was that from the list that they mentioned, “a couple of games” are being worked on.

The list is a who’s who of former greats from things that Microsoft owned:

  • Halo Wars
  • Alan Wake
  • MechAssault
  • Conker’s Bad Fur Day
  • Blinx The Time Sweeper
  • Fusion Frenzy
  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • Kameo
  • High Heat Baseball
  • Otogi
  • Shenmue

If you want to listen to the Inner Circle interview, CLICK HERE

Now with Conker being available on Spark and how nobody really knew Nuts and Bolts were a thing, it’s obvious Microsoft knows that Rare games are in demand. Remember, Spencer said that FROM THAT LIST there are games being worked on right now. My guess it’s another Alan Wake or Halo Wars game. Also, Microsoft/X-Box needs a baseball game and High Heat Baseball could fill that void that RBI Baseball tried to fill and failed to fill.

What fan favorite game from that list are you interested in seeing? Is there a game you want on that list?

Microsoft buys Mojang, makers of Minecraft

Microsoft Mojang

This past Monday, Microsoft has officially announced that they have acquired Mojang, the creators of Minecraft. And the amount that it was bought for… $2.5 Billion. That’s a whole lot of money for a small Indie Developer. Rumors of this deal has been circulating for almost a week before the announcement. Everyone, including myself, were curious as to what it meant for the little developer with a global hit, and what could happen in the future. Most interesting is the fact that this deal doesn’t even include any of Mojang’s founders. Jakob, Carl, and the developers iconic developer and main creator of Minecraft, Notch.

Microsoft has bought into several developers over the years, making a lot of their future games exclusive to their platform. Some of the companies have been quite successful such as Bungie with the super popular Halo series and Lionhead with their fun Fable rpgs. Some not going quite as well such as Rare who’s best game since their acquisition was the Conker remake. One of the facts that probably let to the acquisition by Microsoft is how popular the game has gotten. It has sold about 54 million copies across all platforms with 15 million on PC, 21 million on iOS and Android, and 12 million being on Microsoft’s very own Xbox 360.

So, why, after so many other requests to buy the developer, has Notch allow Microsoft to buy his company from him? He doesn’t want the responsibility of owning a company with such global significance anymore. He didn’t expect Minecraft to become so popular around the world like it did, and with all the pressure he got from it, it became rough for him to work on new projects when he stepped down developing Minecraft several years ago. He attempted some small projects but just couldn’t get them off the ground running a much larger company than he ever wanted. He became an Icon and was still tied to something that he doesn’t have anything to do with anymore. Getting a backlash for the change to the EULA he had nothing to do with. He wants to continue making small games and decided he couldn’t do that while running Mojang because at heart, he is just a humble programmer and just loves to make things because it’s fun, as he mentions on his [blog].

What this means for Minecraft’s future then? Mojang already put up a [blog post] explaining the whole thing. They will continue working on Minecraft as they always had. They will continue making their updates that will keep adding content to the game and allowing the community to be as it is with no change. Minecraft will also continue to be developed for all platforms as well, even Sony’s Playstations. Probably the only difference we may notice is more exclusive DLC for the game on Microsoft’s consoles. Microsoft may also push to bring the game to the Windows Store and well as Windows Phones. There has also been speculation on bringing Oculus Rift support to it since Notch was against it after the Facebook buyout.

javaw_2014-09-17_00-46-32Some still fear Microsoft will ruin Minecraft. I honestly think they will do right, keep Mojang just how it is, developing endless updates to the game, and not messing with 4J’s(the console port developer) plans to continue developing for all platforms. I’m sure I’ll continue to enjoy the game just the same as I play it for years to come.

Friday’s Fave Five: Crossovers That SHOULD Happen

With the popularity of games, such as Marvel v. Capcom, Super Smash Bros, and Kingdom Hearts (lesser known: Robocop v. Terminator), companies have had success crossing over different realms of the video game spectrum. These are games that aren’t even being mentioned but things that, honestly, I would snatch up in a heartbeat.

5. An X-Box Smash Bros/All-Stars style – I am probably the only one who thinks this and even wants something like this, even with the knowledge of Playstation All-Stars kind of got swept under the rug after the initial thought of that game being good. Microsoft has a nice list of BAD ASS characters that are on their roster that, now, they can in fact do a game similar to those of Nintendo and Sony. Not to mention, they have the rights to Rare Ware and can put the likes of Banjo-Kazooie and Conker in their game, along side Battleblock Theater guy, Master Chief, Marcus Fenix and Alan Wake.

4. Family Guy/Simpsons Games – Both are HUGE cartoons owned by the same franchise, FOX. Both have dipped their hands in video games. Both video games have faltered, with the exception of Road Rage, which was the best of the bunch. They both have very successful mobile games. Why not double dip your video games, kind of like what Mario and Sonic did with the Olympics? It wouldn’t be as bad as Mario v. Sonic at the Olympics because you’re going to expect it to be bad because of the humor that the two shows brings. So why not? Fighting games? I’d love to see a Cleveland Brown v. Moe battle. There is so much left to tap in this crossover between the two families and we’re just tapping into it with the crossover show on Fox.

3. Dragon Age/Mass Effect – Now, I know there were rumors that, somehow, the storyline of Dragon Age and Mass Effect are linear to one another and we know that Mass Effect likes to go back in time, sometimes. So this might be one of the ones that are, probably, the closest from actually happening. Mass Effect 3 left a lot on the table with where they want to go with things and, if I am not mistaken, both games have little Easter Eggs going against one another, so why not? Why not do what Mass Effect did in the From Ashes DLC and have someone, not just everyone just someone, from one game placed in the other? It would be pretty cool to see because of how successful both companies have done in years.

2. Civilization/Sim City – In both games, you are God. In both games, you control the world that you live in. In both games, you rule with an iron thumb. I would love to see a moment in Civ where you get to control giant alien spiders or control weather to wipe out an entire nation, like in Sim City. That would just be an OP way of getting a 1-Up on the other guy.

1. YOU GOT MARVEL IN MY DISNEY! – Think about it, people. Kingdom Hearts is a crossover mecca. You got themes from all walks of life and, now, with Disney buying Marvel, wouldn’t it be interesting to see Ironman or Hulk fighting alongside Goofy? NOT EVEN KINGDOM HEARTS! THREE WORDS EVER SINCE I HEARD THE DISNEY AND MARVEL MERGER: MARVEL V. DISNEY! That’s all I really want. I want a fighting game, like Marvel v. Capcom, where both companies (who have a butt load of characters to begin with) settle their differences in an epic fighting game where the final bosses are the tag team of Stan Lee and the giant disembodied head of Walt Disney (heck, throw in Darth Vader and Star Wars)

E3: Don’t Be Shocked If No Mass Effect 4 News

Before you go all crazy on me about this one, let me please explain. The Mass Effect series is one of the best series that I have played over and over again. I enjoyed my time playing as Shepard and being the horndog that he (or she) was. The Mass Effect series is a gem and if you haven’t played it yet, stop reading this and play it…then come back.

Would I enjoy playing a new Mass Effect? Yeah. Would I be angry if they do announce it at E3? Hell no! Do I want it RIGHT NOW THIS VERY INSTANT?! If they announce it, yes. But I won’t be angry if they don’t.

The fact of the matter is, they don’t need to rush into things. The people over at EA and BioWare have other things that they need to worry about, i.e. DragonAge. An announcement of a Mass Effect game would overshadow their bigger game. They don’t need to rush into announcing anything concerning the Normandy (almost said Shepard, then got sad knowing he’s not going to be in this one). Not to mention, the last time EA and BioWare worked on a Mass Effect game, you guys knew what happened then: Electronic Arts won two Golden Poo awards and had to change their ending because of the petition that was filed by angry Mass Effect fans.

EA and BioWare know that they have a huge and dedicated fan base, they know that they have to make this game pop and make the fans forget about how angry they were with Mass Effect 3’s ending. They must get this game right and they must know what they’re doing before they do it so they don’t have deja vu.

Heck, we’re not even sure if “Mass Effect 4″ is the right title. It could be something completely different and out there. We don’t know.

My guess is if they do announce the new Mass Effect game next week (Remember, they have three chances to do so [EA, Microsoft and Sony]), it’s going to be announced around the same time as the new Mass Effect movie will come out so that they can get as much buys as they can get so as close as they can get to the Mass Effect: The Movie hits theaters, the more money EA will make (and we all know that Electronic Arts likes their money *cough*DAYONEDLC!*cough*.

Just give it time, people. Mass Effect will come. When it does, it will be awesome. Whether it is next week or next month or next year. It’s coming.
