Game 2: The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Hiya folks!

Back with a another game review for you! That makes 2 of 1001. woo progress!!!!

So surprisingly, There are actually 8 different text based adventure games in this book of 1001. The original plan was to do a post for all 1001 games, however i think it would be repetitive and unnecessary to do 8 posts on these games at this point. Unless they stand out in some knock your socks off kind of way games 3-8 will be covered in one post. So stay tuned.

Game Number 2 is one that you will all recognize but probably never played.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Ready for a mind blowing screen shot? Brace yourself!

BOOM! MIND BLOWN!

Well as you have guessed its based on the series of books. Released in 1984 by ready for this? Boom, Infocom.  (notice a pattern here?) It was released for the Apple II, Macintosh, Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari 8-bit, Atari ST and the IBM PC.

Your goal for this game? Follow the story line. This game seldomly gives the player no actual goals. You are there mainly to react to situations.  Although, if you pay attention to the inventory, you’ll notice one lingering problem. You are constantly plagued by a line that says “No Tea”. Get Arthur some fricking tea!

Now, this game however was a pain in the ass that required constant new beginnings. Devious were the coders on this one. There are certain points in the game that if you do not complete correctly, you cannot beat the game. You will not die from these, and the game will continue but you will not win. Period.

Here is one of the parts: “Perhaps the most notorious of these involved getting a Babel Fish out of a dispenser in the hold of the Vogon ship. This extremely tricky puzzle appeared very early in the game, required the player to use a variety of obscure items in a very specific fashion, and had to be “solved” within a limited number of turns. Failure to “solve” the Babel Fish puzzle did not kill the player, but rendered the remainder of the game unwinnable. That particular puzzle became so notorious for its difficulty that Infocom wound up selling T-shirts bearing the legend, “I got the Babel Fish!” ”

So yeah, if the company releases t-shirts celebrating the completion, you know it had to be a pain in the ass.

Also back then Infocom used to release novelty items to make the game seem more real and gave you something to laugh at. For this game they gave out the following:

  • A pin-on button with “Don’t Panic!” printed in large, friendly letters
  • A small plastic packet containing “pocket fluff” (a cottonball)
  • Order for destruction of Arthur Dent’s house
  • Order for destruction of Earth written in “Vogon” (actually an English cryptogram written in a thinly-disguised Cyrillic alphabet. The text was nearly identical to that of the English Order for Destruction, so it was not hard to solve.)
  • Official Microscopic Space Fleet (an empty plastic bag)
  • “Peril Sensitive Sunglasses” (a pair of opaque black cardboard “sunglasses”)
  • How Many Times Has This Happened to You?, an advertising brochure for the fictional guidebook/encyclopediaThe Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
  • No tea

This game was later released with some graphics by the bbc for the 20th anniversary and to this day is still available for your playing pleasure over at Douglas Adams website right here enjoy!

Also, A new Chachi Says the vidcast celebrating the 25th birthday of The Legend of Zelda is up for your viewing pleasure!

so enjoy!

Chachi Says: Regardless of the repetitiveness of text adventures its still fun to play one you havent played for a half hour or so. Gives you a chance to appreciate the storyline for yourself. Wow, sometimes when i put my mind to it i can be a real blogger!

The one in which i fill your afternoon.

Well Hi there!  I know, I know, I’ve been gone for far too long and that is completely unacceptable. i apologize, but it was for a good reason and you probably followed along over there at http://www.chachiplays.com so hush it!

I for one welcome our new robot overlords, hehe Ken Jennings you crafty little S.O.B.

I have decided to introduce something new here at Chachi Says.  I was given an awesome book from an awesome person. 1,001 Video games you must play before you die. I have played a lot of them but not nearly the dent i thought.  So i shall do my best to go through and play all 1,001 video games in this book. Im starting with the text based adventure games such as Zork. Theres 5 or 6 of them in the book. So it will take a little bit if i play them through to completion.  So here is also what im going to do. If there is a game you think every one needs to play at least once, let me know. I’ll give it a shot.

And Finally one of my friends on twitter, @rasager sent me this video.

A trailer(a joke trailer, dont get too excited.) for the legend of zelda. it is amazing. its video game meets John Hughes Movie and that to me = success. enjoy!

Chachi Says: absence makes the heart grow fonder or something like that. i was gone, but now im back and i brought gifts! Enjoy. Also seriously let me know if you think there is something i should play. Happy Birthday Legend of Zelda! first drink is on me!

Secret Level 1: ToonStruck

*insert secret found sound effect here*

Now i realize that i blatantly told you where to click to find this post. this will not happen each time. But if you see a randomly hyper linked word or punctuation mark. It’s going to lead you to one of these posts! So click that link and see what i think should have been in the book.

Secret Level 1: Toonstruck

Remember that time that Christopher Lloyd was in a video game? if you said no, then you have missed out an a weird weird completely funny game. I don’t say funny as in the game play itself is funny, the game is just a funny game. here is the story.

Drew Blanc (played by Christopher Llyod) is a cartoon animator and the original creator of the Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun Show. This show has been an unprecedented ten year success for his company, but in reality the many cute talking rabbits that star in the show sicken him. His self-revered creation, Flux Wildly, a wise-talking and sarcastic small purple character, has been denied the chance of starring in his own show. Drew’s boss, Sam Schmaltz (played by Ben Stein), sets him the task of designing more bunnies to co-star in the Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun Show by the next morning. However, the depressed animator soon nods off, suffering from acute artist’s block. He wakes early the next morning to inexplicably find his television switched on, announcing the Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun Show. Suddenly, Drew is mysteriously drawn into the television screen and transported to an idyllic two-dimensional cartoon world populated by his own creations, among many other cartoon characters. He soon befriends Flux Wildly, and discovers that this fictional paradise is being ravaged by a ruthless new character with a devastating weapon of evil, a flying machine equipped with a ray beam that mutates the pleasant, childish landscape and its inhabitants into dark, twisted and mean versions of themselves. He is tasked with hunting down and stopping this madman, thereby restoring peace and harmony to the land, in return for safe passage back to three-dimensional reality.

So you have an artist with a block named Drew Blanc, Heh. oh how i am amused by simple things.

Quite simply this is a point and click game filled with puzzles. Over time this game has stood out in my mind as one of those games where the designers had to have been tripping on the strongest acid available.

The game was developed by Burst Studios, and published by virgin interactive.  and by looking at the list of games Burst made im thinking they only found the acid for toonstruck.

  • Gold Games 2
  • Grand Slam
  • Spot Goes to Hollywood
  • Toonstruck
Heres a couple more screenshots of what the game looks like.
Now replay value on this game is about medium. the puzzles remain fresh so its not a challenge but reliving the story is always fun. However, getting the game to play is a little bit of a chore. the game does not like to run on the newer systems. So you will need the help of a software called DosBox to emulate a dos machine but once you get that set you’ll be good to go.
Chachi Says: This is one of those games that you wish the story could continue, and because of the extras they cut out of this one there could be if they would ever release it. from what i understand there are petitions all over the net to get it released.

Exploration Expedition…..

Ha! bet you thought i couldn’t spell those words? Boom done!

Nothing really important or interesting to say today. So here is a bunch random crap i have fun with.

I think its fun! Hopefully you do too.

Here’s another Gary The Goomba Picture that could really use a caption……..

So give me a caption!

Chachi Says: its great when you can be distracted and entertained by little stuff sometimes.

Once Upon a Time, in a web space far far away….

A long long time ago, i had a domain name, i will not name it here but it was pretty much the same as http://www.chachisays.net except the .net part. that was something different.

Well, if you know me, then you are aware of the fact that i can be quite forgetful. I try hard to remember everything and fail hard. So this domain was registered to an email address i quit using, thus i never received the emails telling me that i needed to renew the domain or lose it.  And i lost the domain.

And enters the sniper.

It was no ones fault but my own, i couldve prevented this from happening and did not. So she took what i built. i dont remember her name, seo was plastered all over her website and there were fake customer testimonies and useless information everywhere.  She wanted 90 bucks or so for it. i refuse to give this lady money for my name back. that would be rewarding her for being a bitch. and homie dont play that.

So i watched, and waited. and nothing. she still kept it. until one day i decided to check it.  Only to find she found a buyer for it. Imagine my disgust when i found out that not only was it passed on like a whore but that it was being used as a gigantic network to steal blog post from across the web and replicate them.

So on to my point… I want to destroy them. They are using something that i worked hard to build and posting stolen wares on it. They are using it as a dumping ground. they took my nice neighborhood and threw a couple of cars up on blocks and made it a ghetto.  Currently, the stolen blog posts rank 4th and 5th in a google search.  i want to remove them from the top results.

So in light of all thats happened. Starting monday, you will get consistent content from me here at chachi says. You’ll notice i’ve left out names, and links and other reference points, i dont want to generate any traffic for them.

Chachi Says: Sometimes, due to circumstances beyond anyones control you must do evil so that good can prevail. so it is with that i am declaring war. There can be only one and all that good stuff.

ITS MONDAY!!!!!!

Its another monday around here and as you know mondays are awesome.(well here at chachi says at least)

Its new video day!!!! Recorded and shipped off to editing for a nice spit shine thanks to Sorg.

This week i talk about boobs and zombies. Not together that would just be weird.

as always leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Stay tuned all week for awesomeness and announcements!

Chachi Says: Hopefully this kick starts your week off right!

Grab your sword, Its time for an adventure.

So, if you’re reading this and you’re gamer, you recognize the image at the top of the screen. You should  be able to figure out what my favorite game is. In fact, if you know anything about me, have seen me in person or chatted at length with me you should know what my favorite game. OF ALL TIME.

I’ve saved many versions of princess zelda over the years. More than any other princess in my time of playing video games. It has helped me increase the power of mind helping me to easily solve problems at work and school.

Here are some other things i’ve learned about life from the games.

All I know I learned from Zelda
Listen to wise old wizards.
Princesses are worth saving.
Pick up coins whenever you can.
Stay out of dungeons.
Avoid the undead.
Find the magic sword.
Everybody needs jewels.
Wisdom Power and Courage are the Triforce.
I’m the chosen one

Now dont get me wrong. There are some games in the series that i’m not particularly fond of. Whether it be the art, the story, the story and the art….

These two would be Majora’s Mask and Windwaker.  These games rubbed me the wrong way. did not  care for them. the art in windwaker was too cartoonie for me and i didnt like the story and game play of Majora’s mask.

Now, im currently working The Phantom Hourglass for the DS. and the only thing saving this game is the innovation of the ds. This game incorporates all that is the nintendo ds.  hell, theres a part where you have to close the ds to transfer an image on to your map.  You have to yell through the microphone at points.(this made me seem like a crazy guy to the passerbys as i was playing the ds outside at the time.)

These games just didnt go well with the series in my mind. im sure im wrong or people disagree.

Oh, my dream girl. *sigh*

Chachi Says: Saving princesses is all the rage. Treat the women in your life like you would these princesses and all will be good. Also, Take this its dangerous to go Alone.
