You guys remember Sonic, right? Blue hedgehog? Red shoes? Fights Dr. Robotnik? Friends with a yellow fox who, somehow, has three tails and flies around? Yeah, you know Sonic the Hedgehog! Well, they just released a brand new version of Sonic in Sonic Boom (and yeah, as I typed that I did it in a very bad impression of Guile’s voice). Anyways, here’s the new game that comes out for the Nintendo systems.
Overall, this game looks like a slight winner in the early stages, which is quite a step up (Who could forget the “fun” of Sonic Adventures and the “revolutionary” video game Sonic 3D?). The graphics look amazing and everything looks right in the time for making a good version of a Sonic game.
However, I’m pretty sure the first thing you noticed isn’t the graphics or how the game looks but you were focused on one character. Right? WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO KNUCKLES?! I mean, I know he uses his upper body but this is ridiculous! He just looks like a giant awkward red triangle! All I can think of is Knuckles took some major steroids since the last time we met the poor guy. That or he is closely morphing into a Battletoad. Knuckles is the Barry Bonds of the video game world. The dude is dwarfing EVERYONE in the game! EVERYONE!
Also, notice one thing missing? One person? Like, someone who made the first Sonic game (and subsequently every single Sonic game out)? I mean you have Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and even Amy! However, um…where the hell is Robotnik?! If anything, it made me think that the single Twinmold at the end is controlled by Robotnik. I call it “Eggsnake”.
(Mini Rizz Rant) Can we PLEASE stop calling Doctor Robotnik “Dr. Eggman”? That’s not his name. Stop it. You’re making him feel bad. It’s not his fault! He probably has a glandular problem, you jerks.
Along with the new video game, Sonic Boom will run cartoons in the near future.
What video game transformations did you like? Dislike?
Well depending on where you reside in this big round world, it may be summertime and it may be extremely warm. Well as nerds we don’t really like to go outside when its uncomfortable (or some of us at all.) weather wise. So while you are inside enjoying the cool air here are some winter or snow based games that you can try to help you beat the heat….mentally that is!
A couple classics and a couple newer games for you to play if you haven’t or replay if you have. Either way these games are fun and at least worth a shot.
First up, Released in the US in 1985. You can fight enemies and break through the ice as you help Popo and Nana make their way up the mountain top. Using their mallets 1-2 players can cooperate or compete to break through rock and ice to gather more points on the way to the peak! A classic game that you should defently re visit for hours of fun. You can find the game online at virtualnes.com or buy a copy on amazon or ebay for a decent price!
Next up also from the NES released in 1985, freeze the competition by dominating them in the Winter Games! Compete in such events as Alpine skiing, Ski jumping, Biathlon, Bobsled, Figure skating, Speed skating, Luge and Freestyle skiing. This single player game allows you to compete in all events, choose a few or practice ones that you have a hard time with! Also available on virtualnes.com or at an affordable price on amazon and ebay.
On to a couple newer games! NHL 13, The latest installment from EA Sports features new game play and updated graphics. Start at the bottom in one of several minor leagues and work your way up to being drafted by an NHL team and carve your legacy in history, or you can run your own team against other members of the ps network or xbox live in GM mode. Either way, this game will kill some hours and keep you entertainment on ice. Available on Amazon in the 30-40 range.
Last but not least on this extremely short list of winter fun games who could spend hours indoors without some of gamers best friends! That’s right you can join Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics! Play along with Nintendo’s and Sega’s favorite character in some real Olympic events and some far fetched ones. One of the Wii’s best party games and definitely worth at least trying. Available on amazon from anywhere between 10 and 40 dollars.
Those are just some of the winter based games you can play to take your mind off the heat! Certainly doesn’t scratch the surface though! what are some of your favorite winter/snow/cold based games to play? Let me hear them in the comments below!
Everyone miss me? I missed all of you! If you were wondering where I was, I was on a nice little vacation from this fun site and reality. However, don’t think I forgot about my nerdiness and, more importantly, you guys out there reading my material. I had time to take my gaming consoles with me and enjoyed a few games. Then one day sitting on the beaches of Avalon, New Jersey, I pondered the question of what are my favorite games to play in the Summer?
This is, personally, one of my all-time favorite summer games to play. No rules, no storyline, just a fun and entertaining game that featuring one of America’s all-time favorite characters, Mario.
Along with everyone’s favorite plumber, he is joined on the Super Nintendo by the Mario mainstays of Luigi, Bowser, Yoshi, The Koopa Troopa, Donkey Kong (who is, for some reason, is wearing a white tank top) and Princess. In the N64 version, we are able to play as Mario’s evil double (and my, personal, favorite character…for some odd reason), Wario. For the Wii, it added a whole slew of fun characters (Dry Bones, Waluigi, Baby Mario, Baby Peach, King Boo to name a few) and, honestly, the Wii version is my favorite character selection because of the variety I had to select and, to be honest, that’s an awesome feature in this game.
The reason I got hooked on MarioKart to begin with was the outstanding visual effects. I could sit here and talk about the awesome settings one course by one but there’s one course in these three games that NEEDS to be taken into account. I THINK you and I all know what I’m talking about:
RAINBOW F’N ROAD!
There’s something that needs to be said that the best track in the game only features nothing more than stars and a rainbow track. However, it’s STILL the best track in a game and is one of my favorites. This track, alone, makes every game in this franchise playable for years to come.
I know there’s more to these games than Rainbow Road, like Bowser’s Castle, however Rainbow Road has been a mainstay in most of the games that actually succeeded in the franchise. It was that hypnotic road of bright colors behind that black background that got the gamer’s attention and is one of the coolest things in any games I’ve played.
Let’s just hope there’s no hidden messages of any sort in it.
The one thing that makes this an awesome summertime game is its ability to hook players, like myself, in their world without a story. Just plop in the game, plop down on a chair and play as your favorite character.
When I was on vacation this past week, my little cousin came with us and we had him play the Wii for a while and one of the things that he did was play a butt-load of the Wii, whether it was Wii Sports (which we bought for that reason) or MarioKart and, I’m quite sure, that MarioKart was his favorite because it was easy to play and the visuals were stunning.
Now, I’m not saying that it’s good to play this when you have a 5-year-old mind…but it’s great to have a family and play a game without worrying of long cut scenes that, probably, have no effect on you or your family. Your cousin who’s five wants to play, your family wants to play, you want to play! The MarioKart series allows you to just play and have fun!
Sadly, there have been some attempts to duplicate the success of MarioKart. There were some good ones, some bad ones and some ugly ones. One of the ugliest ones I could think of is, and trust me…it hurts me being a fan of the namesake, Sonic Riders. WHY THE HECK DOES SONIC NEED TO RIDE SOMETHING?! HE’S SONIC! The SEGA guys should stick to doing what they know best, trying to refresh Sonic’s image with a new 2D scroller-type game. NOT trying to copy Mario, who appears to be Sonic’s “new best friend” for the past four years, in everything he does. The reason we liked Mario games is because they were revolutionary and not carbon copies of other games. So, yeah, do that.
One of the good racing games that took the MarioKart format shape was Diddy Kong Racing. Diddy Kong, who appears as a playable character in MarioKart Wii, was cool because, unlike Sonic Riders, it was able to introduce a new aspect to character racing games. In addition to carts, Diddy introduced airplanes and it was, quite, awesome. Hell, I’ll go out and say that Diddy Kong Racing and MarioKart 64 were side by side in my favorite games for the N64.
Question time! What character(s) do you use when playing MarioKart? What track is your favorite? Leave it in the comments below.
Chachi, Frank, and Rizz discuss the games inside of games (gameception?), what video game character would make an interesting supervisor or boss, and turning the tables on video game concepts. Who’s the real bad guy?
In order to stop the bleeding from a loss of 7.1 billion yen (or roughly 8.5 billion dollars), SEGA is going to have to shrink the company. This means that there will be some major cuts coming in the next few months and, obviously, would put a halt to many games that SEGA has already announced production for.
SEGA, before the news of this $8.5 billion cut was announced, has already announced the production of the PC-only game Binary Domain and platform games such as the Olympic game London 2012, Virtua Fighter 5: The Final Showdown, Jet Set Radio, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2, Anarchy Reigns, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Phantasy Star Online 2, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz, Doctor Who: The Adventure Games (Someone check on BobbyFJTown), Yakuza 5 and (one of the best named games I’ve ever heard) Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Death Rabbit.
You already know from the list I just mentioned, which games are safe. I’m pretty sure the fact that the Olympics are once every four years will allow production to continue on London 2012. And SEGA isn’t going to cut their babies of Sonic the Hedgehog, Virtua Fighter and Super Monkey Ball. The wildcard in this is the Yakuza series. I’m not too sure because I, honestly, never played a single minute of Yakuza, so they may be safe. Also, it’s being said that the Aliens series will, probably, be saved.
I think games like Phantasy Star Online 2 and Dr. Who may be safe because of their large fan base that they have all around the world, let alone the U.S. Phantasy Star may be saved, Dr. Who (since it is a new game) probably will be put on hold, but not completely scrapped.
So, sadly, I’m probably not going to have my dream of reporting on the game Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Death Rabbit.
I’m going to have to play my Genesis in remembrance of SEGA’s good moments.
In the comments below, what were/are your favorite SEGA games?
Where you a Sega fan boy growing up? Have a crush on Sonic and his trusty multiple tailed friend aptly named Tails? Was it hard for you to turn in that out dated system, sadly putting the devices into a box and hiding them in the closet? Don’t worry I won’t tell your fellow fan boys that you have since switched to another system.
However, if you happened to have picked up the Nintendo 3ds then you may just be in luck! Nintendo announced that coming in March you can go back and relive your golden age in video games. That’s right folks available in March Sega Game Gear games will be available for download on your very one Nintendo 3DS.
The March release will be in Japan to start with Sonic 2, Shinobi, and Dragon Crystal to start at about 3.75 a piece. Don’t fret it wont be long until those games make their way here to the good ol’ us of a.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
After the huge success of Sonic the Hedgehog and the release of the Sega Masoct Sonic, Sega went right back to work, giving the sega fans what they wanted. A Sequel. Now unlike other posts in which ive stated that the company destroyed the series or overdid it with a sequel right away, Sega did not. Sega did it right.
Although this time Sonic did not come alone. This time Sonic brought along a new friend, Miles “Tails” Prower. The player can select how they want to play the game, As Sonic or Tails alone, or have tails following Sonic.
The game introduces a new move and bigger levels. The move is the famous Super Sonic Spin Dash. which allows sonic to curl up in a ball and charge up speed to allow him to reach a high platform or speed through a part of the level defeating enemies on the way.
Once again, Dr. Robotnik is after the Chaos Emeralds so that he can power his new weapon the Death Egg. The bonus rounds in the game have changed too. instead of the 360 rotating levels they are now halfpipe races in which Sonic must avoid obstacles and collect the rings. If he reaches the end he collects the emerald and next time can play the next bonus level. if the player fails he must redo this one the next time he qualifies.
Once again the Chaos Emeralds have no real effect on the outcome of the game, they merely change the story line and alter the way Sonic wins.
Chachi Says: When done right sequels are awesome. This is one of those times. The only thing lacking in this game is the excuse for two player which is the bonus level as a race.
