Last thoughts on E3

I’ve been thinking about what was revealed at E3 last week, the good, the bad, the great, the things that made us go hmm.. (puppets)  and It’s led me to this decision.  Video games are art, they’re entertainment, and they’re here to stay.

Let me start by showcasing my favorite reveals from E3.

Cuphead on Xbox One’s ID@XBOX
When it comes to the argument of video games being art,  There were a few games at E3 we can now point to  and have validation in that argument.  Cuphead is one of the games.  You play as Cuphead a cartoon character who much like Micky Mouse’s Steam Boat Willy is a cartoon come to life,  and it’s one of my favorite games of E3.
ReCore on Xbox One
ReCore was a breath of fresh air during an E3 that was full of reboots, sequels, and retro games.  It’s actually great to see Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune’s creative influence set free from Capcom,  If you listen to our podcast you know my thought’s on Capcom lately.  But just to see him creating new games and properties is great to see, and this game looks fantastic.  It’ll be neat to see how each robot can be changed with each core, and how the environment changes with each storm.
The Last Guardian on Playstation 4
Another case can be made as a video game as a work of art,  This game was announced at E3 in 2009 for the PS3, it was all but forgotten by Sony.  This was one of the reasons I purchased a PS3, the game never came, however Sony says that the game was so graphically intense that they needed to push it to the PS4, Will I get a PS4 for this game,  I may eventually but with the other line up that Sony had it’s making me want a PS4
Horizon Zero Dawn
Another strong candidate for Sony,  The only thing with Sony’s press conference was that most of the games that were announced have a release date in 2016, Which is great for people who don’t own a PS4 yet because we get to wait and not miss many new games that are made by Sony.  Horizon is one of the games that has that quality that makes me want a PS4, much like The Last of us was a clincher for me buying a PS3.  Giant robotic dinos and animals being hunted by bow and arrow in a stealth game sounds great and looks amazing by the early look we got at E3.
Mario Maker on the Wii U
Mario Maker is something I’ve always dreamed of doing since I was a kid,  In fact, I always would draw levels like the creators of Mario used to do when the planned a level out.  I did it with Mario, Mega Man, Donkey Kong you name it.  I don’t own a Wii U, but this game makes me really want one.  I do have a 3ds, so I might just bide my time and see if they announce anything for it instead.  But with no Zelda on Wii U it makes me question if it’s worth buying a Nintendo system.   This game was definitely a bright spot for Nintendo along with Star Fox and Yoshi’s Wooly World.  Since they announced the new system would be coming out, I’m not sure it’s the right time to jump into a Nintendo Console.
With all the games that were announced at E3 these were my favorites.  There were way too many to mention all of them, but I was slightly disappointed in the lack of Red Dead Redemption.  Maybe Rockstar will see that Red Dead lead the way as far as what gamers wanted to be backwards compatible on Xbox One,  Maybe it’s time for a new Red Dead game.  Maybe next year… Maybe later this year some news will come… Till then I’m going to happily play what games I have and what’s coming down the pike this year.

Coalition first announced Gears of War Ultimate Edition, the remake of the original for the new hardware. It will be relased 8.25.2015

I think Microsoft has a strong lineup to end the year now, and with the inclusion of backwards compatibility, they just grew their library for their newest system exponentially.

Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2

Forza Motorsport 6

Dark Souls III

Fable Legends

Is It September Yet? Destiny

As talked about last night on Boss Battle, Chachi and I both went on quite the amazing journey this weekend. Destiny released the beta of their game just so that they could see how well the servers did for a big load. I know that I was very skeptical about Destiny, with all of the news stories coming from it (big money being spent and certain voice actors not doing a good job explaining moon wizards). The only thing that it had going for it was that the beta was free so…what could possibly go wrong?

Graphics: Damn! Where do I begin with this? For something that is only a Beta,Destiny already looks astonishing. Everything is in full detail, EVERYTHING. There’s nothing that Bungie has to do to make this game look even better, but knowing Bungie they will try to make it even better in two months. Just take a look at these pics, tell me what you think. Oh wait! I know what you will think. “HOLY CRAP! LOOK AT THOSE GRAPHICS!”

Character Selection: Normally when the only thing that you get to choose and edit is the face of your character, it sucks. However, in Destiny you are going to have a fun time just by doing this simple task. There are three classes in Destiny to choose from: Human, which is what you think humans to look like. Awoken, is like an Avatar-like blueish-gray person. But I believe if you looked at the entire group of Beta, you would actually find out that most of the people who played the beta will probably choose the Exo class. Why? BECAUSE YOU GET TO BE A ROBOT! There are more selections inside those three choices that make your selection YOUR selection. Just by doing the head and choosing Titan, Warlock and Hunter, it helps make you express yourself and it will be highly unlikely to find the exact same character.

Fun: Fifteen minutes in this beta, something that was going to be closed Sunday night, I didn’t do any missions. None. I was going to. I really was. However, when you tell me there is a button for me to press to have a constant dance party with whomever is around me, I am going to go out there and say that pressing the right button, going away from my game console, coming back only to find out that I’m still dancing and gained two on lookers in the hub is something I can get behind.

Peter Dinklage: As much as I want to get behind The Dink (who is one of the better actors in the world), I just can’t understand one thing: during the game, Dinklage was a emotionless AI that follows you around, I can understand that. However, changing the way he talks during the game is kind of awkward, as he does get emotional during the boss battle yelling “IT’S COMING THROUGH THE WALL!” before going back to being emotionless is just awkward. AIs are either like EDi in Mass Effect or Wheatley in Portal 2, I don’t think mixing the two would work and it looks like Peter was trying to find his niche in the AI world.

Multiplayer: I like the fact that this is a multiplayer in the sense of something like Borderlands, I like that you can either play single player or grab some friends and play multiplayer. The only thing that I have a problem with is if I want to play as a single player, I want to play single player. Seeing other players around me is kind of nerve racking. Not to mention that if you are by the start of the game and there are enemies around, those enemies will indeed regenerate and THAT is annoying.

Simplicity: This one could just be me but when I chose a new location to start a mission in and they plop me down at the same exact spot I just left at. It had me thinking back and forth about if I did do this mission or not. I know this is just the Beta but it’s the same exact level. I’ve seen that reservoir before, those hideouts are the same hideouts and in the same spot, I have to go up the same ramp and into the same dark corridors, it’s the same level…but suppose to be different.

Overall, you should at least try and play this game. The pros totally outweigh the cons and it’s going to be an awesome September…even though NOW we have to just…wait…for the full game. Now what?

Games for Gold kicking the year off big! And a helpful tip.

After ending on a slow note last month with Shoot Many Robots as the last free game for gold members of 2013, Xbox comes up strong in January with the next batch of free games.

Starting yesterday and through the 14th the free game for gold members is Sleeping Dogs. Sleeping dogs is an open world, action adventure game in which you try to infiltrate the Triad gang. The game did mediocre sales wise when released but was a popular new IP. The other game being given away this month starting on the 15th is Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light the download only title that was released on Xbox live, Steam and PSN.

So it seems as if they are off to a great start for the year. Also, as a reminder if you want these games and dont have time to play them if you confirm the purchase and cancel the download you will have these games available to you even after they are not available for free.

Don Mattrick leaves Xbox and heads for Zynga

It was announced today that Don Mattrick, The head of Microsoft’s Xbox gaming division is leaving for a position as head of Zynga,  This comes as a surprise to many gamers as Mr. Mattrick was a huge present at E3 for Microsoft and pretty much hosts almost every E3 Press conference for Microsoft.  Many people were surprised by his comments about Xbox One’s Always On proclamation.  Soon after E3 he stated that if you didn’t have high speed internet to stick with the 360.

His Departure also comes on the heels of Microsoft’s backtrack of a lot the information that was given on the Xbox One’s  policies, The move to Zynga comes as a surprise because many thought he would return to EA and have a position there.  Do you think he is doing the right thing and moving on from the Xbox One ordeal,  Do you think he will be a good fit to try to bring Zynga back to what it once was?  Let us know in the comments!

Xbox 180. The Dream is Dead.

Xbox_Consle_Sensr_controllr_F_TransBG_RGB_2013The dream is dead.

And it’s all of our faults.  Event Microsoft

When the Xbox One was finally announced, Microsoft promised a world with digital distribution and even a chance to “sell” your digital goods with an upcoming system. Your discs that you bought as we do today seemed more of a means to deliver masses of data. Remember these are Blu Ray discs now, holding upwards to 30 GB. I can’t imaging anyone wanting to download that on most of today’s connections. So we still need this built in “Sneakernet”  until we get the infrastructure to go purely digital nationwide (or at least the markets where Xbox One will be).

Some of you out there, like me, have a Steam account.  A digital “locker” where I keep my video games, practically.  For those that don’t know how it works, I buy a game, and don’t have to keep it anywhere.  when I want to snag Duke Nukem 3D for any of my multitude of PCs and Macs in the house, I just log in and get it.  It’s to the point where it’s so convenient that I have repurchased a number of games I own on disc just to know I’ll still have it in the cloud.

Microsoft was promising a system similar to this, I think, but even better.  Could you imagine if you could sell the digital goods you have in your massive Steam library?  This is  unprecedented.

So what went wrong?  The message.  Microsoft came to the party with a swagger similar to what doomed the Playstation 3 when they attempted to justify a wildly more expensive, and complicated system at the beginning of the last generation.  Instead of touting how this will be helpful with us, the explanations told us what will happen, but not why it will benefit us.   This made it all come off like just another way for the companies to lock down the game you bought, when in truth, we do have to give up a little bit of “ownership” for this digital distribution thing to work.  I still haven’t heard a legitimate reason for a 24 hour check in over once a week, month, etc.

Microsoft was selling us a future the loud masses were not ready for.  Like Captain Kirk showing the Enterprise to a primitive culture, there was a reaction.  Like Microsoft violated some Prime Directive of generational console progression.

So the future has been delayed in gaming.  Maybe after a few years when we’re ready, we will get these features in a future dashboard update.  I can only hope.

What do you think of the Xbox change?  Do you weep for the lost future, or glad you can go to Gamestop as nothing’s changed?

Before E3 2013: Microsoft

To get a better idea at what Microsoft is working on, you must delve into what they have done so far this year.

  • They have made it easy for you to catch shows online
  • They have revolutionized how one watches television
  • They have made it easier to order a pizza, listen to music and other stuff
  • Two weeks ago they introduced the hardware and abilities of the XBox One

With that last bulletpoint STILL fresh in the mind, let’s jot down at what I am expecting from this year’s Microsoft E3 announcement.

  • A price
  • Rareware rehashing old franchises (Killer Instinct, Donkey Kong[?], Conker[?], Banjo-Threeie [Nuts and Bolts do not count as a sequel!])
  • Hopefully, there will be more next gen gameplay from games
  • Microsoft will try to make the 360 will still be functional for five years
  • Microsoft will also try and sell 5 million more 360s to the people who don’t have a 360
  • gameplay from the Xbox One
  • Loose ends that the announcement of the Xbox One didn’t tie up
  • More specs on the Xbox One, itself
  • The announcement and usage of more apps (probably another Skype call)
  • More uses of the Kinect
  • Usher or some sort of person of dance (Let’s Dance)
  • More game announcements
  • Black Flag Gameplay
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts Gameplay
  • Halo movie teaser trailer

That’s what we are probably going to get. I’m personally excited to see what gems are unearthed from Rareware. What are you expecting to see from Microsoft? It seems that a lot of people want a lot from Microsoft to make their Next Gen decision, Microsoft takes the stage first at 9AM PDT (1PM EST).

Leave your expectations in the comments below.

We will cover all the goings on at E3, starting with Thursday’s Konami E3 announcement all the way through to Ninendo’s E3 announcement and everything in between and the stuff that isn’t being shown at press conferences.

Enjoy the festivities that is E3 from us here at Insert Coin To Begin.

Fable Anniversary HD Announced for Xbox 360

Well today Lionhead Studios released a teaser, that pretty much told us what their next game is going to be.  Fable Anniversary Edition was announced today, The update of the first game, and related DLC has been updated in High Definition and will be released on the Xbox 360 sometime this year.  I for one and looking forward to this, as I didn’t have an original Xbox and never really had enough time with the first Fable game to get a feel for it.  I loved Fable 2 and 3 though even though some people thought Fable 3 fell flat, I even bought the collectors edition.  Do you think this is all that Lionhead will be announcing at E3?  Do they have another Fable Game that’s not a remake ready for the Xbox One?  Time will tell but till then we can enjoy this brand old game from the nice people at Lionhead Studios!  Are you happy with this news?  Do you think Lionhead will announce a new game at E3?  Let us know in the comments!

REVIEW: BattleBlock Theater

Background: This is all the background that you need in the game.

CapturebbtGameplay: The gameplay is simple. Every room has 9 required levels, a “boss” and three time trial “Encores”. In order to pass to the next level, you must maneuver your character across the level and collect green gems for currency and yarn balls that can be traded in for special weapons (ice cubes, boomerangs, exploding paper planes, exploding frogs, etc.). The minimum amount of gems that you must collect is 3, however there are a total of seven gems in each level all ripe for the picking. The levels progressively get more difficult as the game progresses and the platformed maps get larger and filled with new ways to torture you.

After you played all 9 levels of the first room, there will be a “boss”. It’s not technically a boss as it is a giant two level speed run of doom where, in the allotted time, you must collect enough gems in order to collect the key to the next locked area where you need to go. Nothing is more frustrating than these levels. Nothing.

After grabbing the key, if you want to do the three bonus levels you can. In each bonus round, you will have a time trial where you must finish the level quick, AKA kind of the same thing for the boss but with one level instead of two. Equally as frustrating, as well.

The gems you collect during these are used to purchase heads (no really). You release prisoners for their heads…it’s kind of creepy. However, this ALSO makes the game highly customizable to what you want to do. There are plenty of meme references, Ren and Stimpy-like faces and others that will make your character unlike the next. Heck, I even saw Waldo.

Did I mention it’s awesome when you have a friend to play? Either local or X-Box Live connections will allow two to play the levels and four to do battles. So…if you want…feel free to be awesome with me on X-Box Live.

Graphics: The cut scenes (as you saw in the introduction to the game itself) feel like you’re not even playing a video game and you’re watching a puppeteer doing his thing. Also, they are quite entertaining and get even more entertaining as the story progress. The graphics in the cut scenes help tell the story. In the gameplay, the graphics show depth and the design is something that isn’t normally seen in the Xbox Live Arcade section. Everything from the enemies to the bombardment of mortars to, my favorite, the things that happen in the background are pretty cool…the vibrant colors don’t hurt, either (I like the pretty colors).

Overall: This game is 2013’s Fez. The graphics and the all-around play-ness makes me not want to pop in Call of Duty or any physical copies of a game and play XBLA (I RARELY do that). If you have 1600 Microsoft Points, download this game. If you don’t, get 1600 Microsoft Points and download that game. It will be well worth it.
